UWB for accurate indoor localization

Ultra-wideband is a wireless radio technology that was specifically designed and developed for accurate localization in 2011. Through its very large bandwidth of over 500MHz, it can achieve a positioning accuracy of below 10cm, even in challenging environments.

UWB is here to stay

About 5 years ago, UWB was still a niche technology only adopted by a few pioneering companies. Today, UWB is present in several smartphones, smartwatches, electric vehicles and various smartphone gadgets. Electronics giants such as Apple and Samsung have made a clear statement that UWB is the main driving technology for location awareness of their devices.  "UWB's rollout and increased adoption is due to wider chipset availability, adoption across multiple segments, and the formation of a healthy UWB ecosystem across the entire supply chain," explains Andrew Zignani, ABI research.

According to the ABI Research forecasts there will be 300 million UWB device shipments in 2021. UWB is indeed here to stay.

How Pozyx pushes the edge of UWB

Pozyx develops and designs its products in-house.
This includes the electronics, the antenna design and housing and allows Pozyx to have full control over the final product quality.
With an in-house electronics lab and anechoic chamber, Pozyx guarantees top of the-line radio performance, resulting in the best possible range and performance.

In the final RTLS solution, Pozyx hardware and firmware are combined with algorithms and analytics software to translate the stream of real-time locations into smart data and value creating insights. Pozyx has also developed accompanying software that makes it easy to install and maintain any set-up.

Pozyx is a strong believer of industry standards and is an active member in various standardization committees such as Omlox to push forward interoperability and promote the eco-space around indoor UWB positioning.

UWB doesn’t magically provide accurate positioning, it does provide the key ingredient to enable it: nanosecond accurate time-stamping of packets.
Enters the patented Pozyx positioning engine: a set of protocols and algorithms that exploit the UWB timestamps to provide the accurate location information and more. Providing meaningful data to make your processes more efficient.

High positioning accuracy

Several positioning algorithms are available with additional smoothing and filtering options to further improve the results. Sensor fusion for additional performance is available upon request.

Through the use of Machine Learning and advanced signal processing, the effect of obstacles (NLOS) is reduced to the maximum extent.

High real-time capacity

Capacity of 2000 position updates / sec with latencies of 20ms max. (on standard gateway equipment)

Large-scale TDOA

Support for time-difference-of-arrival over large areas supporting thousands of unique tags. TDOA offers low-power 2D positioning. For this feature, the engine keeps all anchors tightly synchronized using sub-nanosecond precision with a patented technique.

TWR positioning

Support for two-way-ranging based localization for the highest possible precision. Support for smart anchor selection to always use the best possible anchors.

Autocalibration of anchor positions.

Automagically obtain the relative 2D coordinates of the anchors to allow for extremely fast setup.

Pushing the state-of-the-art

As a spin-off of Ghent University, it is in the Pozyx DNA to keep pushing the state of the art in indoor positioning. With a team of multiple engineers and PhD’s in signal processing, machine learning and telecommunications, Pozyx relentlessly pushes the UWB technology forward.

Pozyx collaborates with different research institutes such as Ghent University and Imec and are involved in a number of national and European research projects such as Lunar or NextPerception with topics like advanced sensor fusion, UWB Angle-of-Arrival, and more.
